Scaling the infrastructure for landscape-level engagement: Walmart Foundation awards IDH USD 750,000 grant

The two-year program will strengthen the SourceUp platform and the Jurisdictional Action Network as long-term public goods, making it easier for the private sector to invest in landscape initiatives where nature, climate, and livelihoods converge.
Agricultural value chains depend on the resilience of the landscapes where commodities are grown. Addressing the systemic drivers of nature loss, climate risk, and farmer livelihoods requires collective action across entire producing regions, not just within individual farms or value chains. And the private sector is responding: corporate engagement in landscape approaches has grown significantly in recent years.
The ambition is there. What is still being built are the systems that facilitate consistent, credible investment: shared platforms where companies can identify qualified initiatives, track progress, and direct efforts towards sustainable land use.
For a decade, IDH has been at the forefront of building those shared systems. Drawing on hands-on experience convening landscape initiatives across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, IDH launched SourceUp in 2022 — a global platform connecting companies with landscape initiatives aligned to their sourcing regions and sustainability goals. In 2025, the Jurisdictional Action Network (JAN), a community of over 2,400 practitioners, companies, and donors advancing landscape and jurisdictional approaches, transitioned to SourceUp, deepening the ecosystem and expanding its reach to new audiences.
In April 2026, the Walmart Foundation awarded IDH USD 750,000 to accelerate this work. The two-year programme “Accelerating Engagement in Place-Based Initiatives via SourceUp and JAN to Strengthen Nature, Climate, and Livelihoods” is designed to remove the barriers that currently limit private sector engagement at landscape scale.
What the program will deliver
A unified global map of qualified place-based initiatives, giving companies the visibility to identify and engage with credible landscape partners.
Structured onboarding support for initiatives, building investment readiness and improving transparency for corporate audiences.
A Corporate Case for Action Hub on the Jurisdictional Action Resource Hub, with practical guidance, evidence, and tools for companies taking landscape-scale action, complemented by a series of corporate trainings that build companies' capability to identify, assess, and invest in credible place-based initiatives
A financial sustainability model for SourceUp and JAN, ensuring both platforms endure as long-term public goods.
Together, these four workstreams directly address a core challenge IDH has identified through a decade of landscape work: to support systemic change in agricultural value chains, private sector investment needs to be easier to direct, and landscape initiatives need to be easier to find, assess, and engage with. This is precisely where IDH's approach delivers: turning market insight and practical expertise into solutions and designing platforms built to last.
The Walmart Foundation's commitment to landscape approaches and to investing in shared infrastructure for sustainable land use is a signal to the broader market that it’s the right approach for supporting change at scale. Their support gives us both the means and the endorsement to make our platforms and support available to many more companies and landscapes.
Place-based approaches offer something no single company can achieve alone: the collective power to protect nature, strengthen communities, and build more resilient supply chains at the same time. Walmart Foundation is excited about the potential for IDH’s work to build the infrastructure that makes it easier for businesses everywhere to be part of that story.
