Creating positive impact for people, planet and progress
Together with our partners, we’re working to develop sustainable business models, create positive on-the-ground impact and improve sector governance in key palm oil-producing countries.
Deforestation, labour abuses, carbon emissions – palm oil has a bad reputation. But palm oil can be produced in a responsible way. By improving production practices and increasing the demand for sustainable palm oil we can protect the environment as well as ensure dignified livelihoods for millions of smallholder farmers.
Our Palm Oil program supports the production of traceable and sustainable palm oil at scale. We do this through partnerships with local and international companies and governments as well as taking action at field level.
On the production side, sustainability objectives include increasing smallholder income, transparent land titles and forest and peat protection. In consuming countries, unifying supply chain actors and working with governments and trade bodies to develop specific action plans.

“In the supply chain, 100% sustainable palm oil isn't available. We must protect the environment, manage chemicals and pesticides responsibly, and support workers and communities. We worked closely with the government and smallholders to raise awareness.”
From convening public-private partnerships at European and national levels and advising on policies to sustainable sourcing models, our goal is sustainable palm oil beyond compliance.
Palm oil drives livelihoods but faces sustainability challenges. IDH and Solidaridad believe there’s a solution.
