Raising the bar through sustainable production, environmental protection and social inclusion
Croplands and grazing lands now cover a third of the earth’s land surface. Through a landscape approach, producers, companies, governments and civil societies work together across sectors and borders to improve sustainability over an entire region.
Our goal is to protect and restore 5 million hectares of vulnerable landscapes by 2030 through integrated solutions to global challenges. We do this by addressing landscape degradation through local livelihoods – targeting activities in producing countries as well as at the global market level.
Flourishing forests, thriving communities, better business
Our landscape program uses an innovative, integrated approach to mitigate deforestation while increasing sustainable production and laying a foundation of good governance.
Through this three-pronged production, protection and inclusion (PPI) approach, our work supports four key stakeholder groups:
- Helping companies source sustainably and go beyond compliance
- Advising governments aiming to protect forests and enable sustainable growth
- Supporting smallholder farmers with sustainable production and developing investment-ready projects
- Developing pipeline opportunities for impact investors
Bringing landscape coalitions to scale through SourceUp
The IDH-powered SourceUp platform enables companies and stakeholders in producing regions to work together on sustainable agri-commodity sourcing – linking landscape coalitions with markets to scale them up, increase transparency, and facilitate more sustainable sourcing decisions.
Where we’re making a difference
We’re working together with our partners on PPI compacts in 22 landscapes.
