From subsistence crop loss to sustainable cash crop

Cassava is a staple crop in Africa and has recently seen an upsurge in demand. But low yields and the tuber’s short shelf life mean more than 40% of yield is lost, and processors struggle to access an adequate supply.

Since 2018, our Cassava Program has been transforming the industrial cassava sector in Nigeria as a prototype for Africa through market transformation and improvement in business practices.

In addition to projects that improve sustainability, expand market share and provide access to finance, we provide technical assistance to integrate smallholder farmers into the supply chain – improving livelihoods, increasing productivity, reducing yield loss and resolving systemic challenges in the value chain.

Creating positive impact for people, planet and progress

Together with our partners, we’re working to develop sustainable business models, create positive on-the-ground impact and improve sector governance in key cassava-producing countries.

The training course given to us through the IDH Cassava program made me realise that cassava has a commercial value when grown well. Before the training, my yield, which was nine tons, has increased to over 20 tons. Now, the cassava is much better quality and sells for more.
