Indonesia is one of the largest forest countries which had history of deforestation attributed to commodities expansion. Since the moratorium on new natural forest concessions in 2011, Indonesia has been successful in halting deforestation. The progress is made through policies, the private sector, and NGOs’ commitments.
IDH Indonesia is working to support Indonesia’s vision in achieving low-carbon development and reducing deforestation through materialising deforestation-free supply chains, better income, and smallholder inclusion. We have been working across three major forest landscapes with key commodities production in Indonesia: Aceh, West Kalimantan, and Papua. In these landscapes, we convene stakeholders (government, private sectors, and CSOs) to transform the supply chain by formulating strategies for optimal land use to ensure that the production of the key commodities, such as palm oil, cocoa, and non-timber forest products (NTFPs), to achieve better productivity and better income, better environment through forest and environmental protection efforts, and remaining inclusive for smallholder farmers.
IDH uses PPI as framework which is stared through development and implementation of the Go and No Go Analysis, a multi-criteria assessment that considers land suitability, HCV/HCS areas (High Conservation Value/High Carbon Stock), spatial planning, and socio-ecological aspects, at the landscape level.
We take insights and best practices from our programs and pilots from the three landscapes into policy dialogues and convening at the national level. These include policy dialogues on traceability through alignment of land legality and farmers' registration.
We drive positive change by involving stakeholders who are committed to responding to the global market's needs. This includes deforestation-free supply chains, job creation, increased incomes, a better environment, and gender equality for all. Through an innovative approach, we co-create and co-fund sustainable business models.
Deforestation-free products and commodities will become the norm, and markets are signaling that through improving their supply chains. To ensure inclusivity for smallholders and forest landscapes in the supply chain, the Indonesia country team supports businesses in meeting these standards and the government in providing an enabling environment for businesses and smallholder farmers to achieve economic viability while upholding environmental responsibility.
