Companies Support Aceh’s Pathway to Inclusive, Deforestation-Free Palm Oil

Launched on 13 August 2025, the Aceh Sustainable Palm Oil Working Group is a voluntary, non-commercial, and pre-competitive working group that aims to support the Aceh Province’s Sustainable Palm Oil Roadmap (2023–2045) through individual and joint efforts by creating enabling conditions for inclusive, deforestation-free palm oil.

Convened and facilitated by IDH, the Working Group operates as a neutral platform and is fully aligned with applicable competition and antitrust laws.

Beyond its structure, this Working Group represents a balancing act: a shared commitment to protecting Aceh’s forests and ecosystems while enabling smallholders to thrive and remain connected to global markets.

It signals that companies are ready to align purpose with performance, proving that environmental protection and inclusion can advance alongside business objectives, and that deforestation-free, inclusive palm oil is not just aspirational, but achievable.

Members of the Working Group have agreed to support the Aceh Sustainable Palm Oil Roadmap goals and contribute to an action plan without sharing any sensitive and/or confidential information, including not sharing commercially sensitive and/or confidential information. In doing so, the members will retain full autonomy over their procurement and sourcing decisions while supporting voluntary sustainability efforts.

The Working Group welcomes other companies to join the Working Group.

The following are some potential key areas for collaboration:

  • Support mills in adopting deforestation-free sourcing practices
  • Integrate smallholders into global value chains
  • Strengthen and utilize Aceh’s forest monitoring system
